Grand Velas Riviera Maya brings the Marvels of the Mayan Jungle In- Suite

6 April, 2018   Social responsibility

Surrounded by 206 acres of jungle, mangroves and freshwater cenotesGrand Velas Riviera Maya is keenly aware of how their presence affects the environment and its ecosystems, and it has been designed to coexist in harmony with such a stunning setting –habitat for an impressive total of 104 animal species and 53 different kinds of plants, palms and herbs–.

Many green initiatives take part of Grand Velas’ environmental objectives and policies, such as a residual water treatment facility, state of the art air-conditioning system that reduces contaminating emissions and energy consumption, the use of biodegradable products for cleaning and maintenance and the invitation for guests to participate in the eco conscientious practices –including those pursued by Earth Check.

This extended invitation includes the design of a card with the picture of one of the local animals who calls the Yucatan Peninsula home. It is part of the turndown service guests receive at the resort to introduce them to the fauna of their jungle and beach setting.

There are five different animal cards: Orange Oriole, Toucan, Iguana, Spider Monkey and Yucatan Jay. On the back of the card more information about the animal can be found. For instance: the oriole is considered a biological pest control agent and the Spider Monkey is characterized by its long limbs and extraordinary agility, while the Yucatan Jay’s yellow beak turns black over time.

An ecological tour through the property gives guests the chance to experience its unique environment and learn about the native flora and fauna of the Yucatan Peninsula, while getting a broader view of the resort’s conservation efforts. Visits to the mangroves to learn about native species, learn about the reforestation efforts of the resort by visiting a jungle consisting of more than 15,000 transplanted trees that help protect native plants and animals, many planted by staff and guests alike. Guests visit the beach to learn about the resort’s innovative artificial reefs off the coast, which not only encourage marine life, but prevent beach erosion. The reefs have quadrupled the width of the beach in four years, making it one of the widest beaches in Riviera Maya –and one of 17 beaches in Mexico to receive the Clean Beach Certification from the government–.
